Kate McCormack, Tennessee born and bred, enjoys teaching English to flight attendants in the Saudi kingdom. However, she has difficulty adjusting to dependence on men to drive her even to the grocery store or to buying clothes from male clerks.

She keeps colliding with Philip Tangvald, a widowed journalist for an American magazine on assignment to study refugees in the Middle East. One abused refugee even ends up in Kate’s apartment.

As she and Philip explore deeper into the ways of the desert kingdom, as well as into past lives, she wonders what burdens he carries from the marriage he refuses to talk about.

The journey toward an answer begins with Kate’s abduction.
